It's Not Just Me That Feels This way

When cancer patient Kate Clarke opened ‘Bangers and Mash’ she was looking for some help.

Newly single with three young children, 41-year old Kate had just been diagnosed with a cancer in her sinus and was feeling very alone.

Author Keith Hern wrote Bangers and Mash for just this reason – his first-hand account of throat cancer doesn’t pull any punches, but, heavily illustrated with photographs of every stage of the treatment, is intended to help de-mystify the process and take away some of the fear.

Now nearing the end of her treatment, Kate credits the book with making a huge difference to they way she faced up to it.  “The official medical information is very thorough, but the difference with this book is that it was another person I could relate to.  I could think: “it’s not just me that feels this way”.

Cancer diaries are not new, but this book goes further by illustrating the text with step-by-step pictures, an important reassurance in their own right, as Kate explains: “to see photos of how Keith looked during treatment and some time afterwards was really important.  The medics have to explain the worst-case scenarios, so seeing a positive outcome was what I needed.”

Judging by the rave reviews the book has received so far (check out the Amazon site) Kate is not alone in feeling this way.
